Windows 7 was intended to be an incremental upgrade to Windows Vista, addressing the previous OS's poor reception while maintaining hardware and software compatibility as well as fixing some of Vista's inconsistencies (such as Vista's aggressive User Account Control). Windows 7 continued improvements on the Windows Aero user interface with the addition of a redesigned taskbar that allows pinned applications, and new window management features. Other new features were added to the operating system, including libraries, the new file-sharing system HomeGroup, and support for multitouch input. A new "Action Center" was also added to provide an overview of system security and maintenance information, and tweaks were made to the User Account Control system to make it less intrusive. Windows 7 also shipped with updated versions of several stock applications, including Internet Explorer 8, Windows Media Player, and Windows Media Center.

- Improved Search: The Start menu included a search bar for quickly finding programs, files, and settings.
- Jump Lists: These allowed users to see recently accessed files and programs when right-clicking a taskbar icon, providing quick access to frequently used items.
- Action Center: This feature consolidated security, troubleshooting, and maintenance alerts into a single location, making it easier to manage system issues.
- Aero: This visual experience included features like translucent windows, appealing color, and graphics effects, along with functionalities like Snap, Peek, Shake, and Flip.
- Aero Shake: Minimized all open windows except the currently active one by shaking the active window.
- Aero Snap: Allowed users to easily resize windows by dragging them to the edges of the screen.
- Windows Desktop Gadgets: These were small, independent applications that could be placed on the desktop to display information like the weather or news.
- User Account Control (UAC): This feature enhanced security by requiring administrator privileges for certain actions, reducing the risk of malware.
- Remote Desktop Services: Enabled users to connect to and control a remote computer from another device.
- Control Panel: Provided a centralized location for managing system settings and configurations.
- Windows Photo Gallery: A free photo editing program designed to work with Windows 7.
